McGraw-Hill’s Tegrity lecture capture has boosted the Washington State Board for Community & Technical Colleges’ distance learning program by enabling instructors to share video recordings of their lectures with students outside of the classroom. The number of online learners (both in hybrid and online courses) in this program continues to climb, having risen 67% last year. The Washington State Board for Community & Technical Colleges’ needed a distance learning technology to scale with the program’s growth, and turned to Tegrity based on positive reviews from other institutions.

Faculty members liked being able to record lectures in advance and upload them for student review. That way, face-to-face class time can be used for more productive activities, such as small seminar discussions, debates, Q&A sessions and problem solving. “Instead of just having a professor lecturing in front of the class for an hour,” said Cable Green, director of e-learning and open education, “the time can be allocated to two-way conversations and other activities.”

Professor Bill Hoover wanted to standardize course content across multiple sections being taught by various instructors to deliver effective content regardless of learning styles. Professor Hoover says, “I had students who were consistently scoring in the low 60’s on each of the weekly quizzes. Once I started assigning homework through Connect, those same students started earning scores in the high 70’s! On average, my students’ performance has risen by 10-15%.”

A recent survey of more than 9,000 college students at more than 200 higher education institutions revealed significant improvement in effectiveness of studying through the use of McGraw-Hill’s Tegrity lecture capture, with 95% of all student participants indicating Tegrity contributed to their success.
